Barcelona 7 night Retreat
A Barcelona Artisan Retreat
Eight days of making, tasting, wandering, and learning in the workshops, studios, and farms of one of the world's great craft cities. Some of our artisan hosts came from other cities to bring their craft here, choosing Barcelona to build their life with their hands — while others hail deeply from Catalan culture to share it with us.
Our accommodations are a historic Modernista home in the very centre of Barcelona, with expansive living space to relax and the ease to wander the city at will. The home is true artisan home with grand hand painted ceiling frescoes and hand patterned Catalan nola tiles, to hand cast brass door handles and modern furnishings reinvented with handwork.
Unlike typical retreats where you are sequestered to an isolated venue and limited by transportation, our home base in the very center of a vibrant city allows you to skip certain activities to opt for free time to explore the many more activities that Barcelona has to offer should you choose. Enjoy this experience at your own pace and tempo.
Everyone trickles into Barcelona where we have a driver meet you at the airport to bring you to our beautiful home. We will have fresh snacks and drinks as you settle in and freshen up. We shake off your journey with a slow, unhurried walk through the old city on a typical Spanish Sunday — past Gothic and Medieval courtyards, tiled tabacs, and hidden plazas picking up local pica pica tapas and vermut along the way to the sea. We end at a table by the Mediterranean for a welcome dinner and the first of many conversations about what we want to make.

We take a leisurely walk after breakfast at a local classic then visit the atelier of Norman Vilalta, one of the world's most celebrated bespoke cordwainers. We see his lasts, his tools, the leather he chooses and why. Lunch at Cafè del Centre, a 19th-century gem of Catalan cooking. Back at our home workshop, we talk through the shoes you'll build and dye your first pieces of leather. Free time before dinner.

We head into the oldest part of Barcelona to historic Raval to visit Catu and Ignacio's shoemaking workshop — a completely different approach to the craft, full of innovation and creativity rooted in tradition. La Boqueria market for lunch: tapas and cava amid the stalls. Then an afternoon in a Catalan taller learning the ancient art of needle felting, guided by a master textile artist. Free time before dinner.

The morning you've been building toward: we finally cut into your leather and begin constructing your shoes. This is the long, satisfying studio session that ends with your own pair of Sevilla Smiths— with a quick lunch folded in as you need it (pica pica will be set up) — and the pieces start to become a pair. In the late afternoon, a blown glass OR jewellery making class (pending confirmation) to shift the hands and the mind, then dinner in Gràcia's plaza among the neighbours.

A day in the countryside: we visit two plant alchemists to create our own indigo baths to dye french linen and yarns to use for our upcoming weaving class. As our materials soak, we forage flowers, herbs, and botanicals and distil them into your own personal infused skin oils. Lunch at a beautiful restaurant — nourished within. Then back to Barcelona for some free time to explore on your own.

A more intimate city day: a tapestry weaving yarns we dyed in indigo ourselves then an espadrille making session in the afternoon — 2 distinct Barcelona barrios. In the evening, we learn about suquet de peix, the "paella" of the Catalan coast: a deeply flavoured broth built on sofregit and picada, with whatever the sea brought in that morning. Then we eat what we made.

We take the train along the coast to Sitges, where we learn bobbin lacemaking — one of the most hypnotic and ancient crafts in Catalonia — before a long walk through the town's whitewashed streets. Dinner is by the sea: relaxed and lingering, and full of everything we've made and seen and eaten together. Our final dinner is early so we have time to head back to pack.

Farewells over breakfast. Your shoes, your scent, your glass, and all your new skills go home with you.

Where We Stay
Our home for the week is a landmark Modernista apartment in the heart of Barcelona: original frescoes, a ballroom, and the kind of proportions that remind you this city was once showing off for the world. Restored to its historic details and shared by just our group of five, it becomes our workshop, our dining room, and our living room all at once — with plenty of space to relax. Located just two blocks from Casa Batlló and Plaça Catalunya, everything is on your doorstep.
