Itinerary Oct 2026 Barcelona 7 night Retreat: a wonderful artisan life
It's a wonderful Barcelona artisan life
Eight days of making, tasting, wandering, and learning in the workshops, studios, and farms of one of the world's great craft cities. Each day is built around a skill you are able to continue on your own. From shoemaking, to Batik dyeing and jewelry making, you'll gain skills that you'll return to again and again along with a lifelong opportunity to live like a local artisan for a week.
Our accommodations are a historic Modernista home in the very centre of Barcelona, with expansive living space to relax and the ease to wander the city at will. The home is true artisan environment with grand hand painted ceiling frescoes and hand patterned Catalan nola tiles, to hand cast brass door handles and modern furnishings reinvented with handwork. It is a perfect backdrop to be fully immersed in hand made living.
Unlike typical retreats where you are sequestered to an isolated venue and limited by transportation, our home base in the very center of a vibrant city allows you to explore what Barcelona has to offer should you choose.
Enjoy this experience at your own pace and tempo.

pick up
We have private transport to pick you up from the airport and bring you to the home. The driver will be waiting for you outside of the security area with your name on a sign. Please head to meet them as soon as you can and keep me updated if there are delays.
The apartment is 1-1 on the buzzer and press 1 on the elevator.
Physical Fitness
You should be comfortable walking on uneven city streets and standing in workshops, but the pace is leisurely.
what to pack and laundry
I will have umbrellas and aprons for you to use. Please do bring 1-2 pieces of cotton that you may want to dye for our Indigo session. Make sure they have been washed at least 5x and no softener. I will also have some linens etc for you to dye.
Dress is informal. Good walking shoes are essential. A light jacket is recommended for evenings in October.
We have access to a laundry machine, but clothes are best hung dry here in Europe. Avoid hard to dry things like jeans as they can take a full day or so to dry.
You'll be met at the airport and brought straight to our home, where snacks and drinks are welcome you while you settle in.
4pm: Once everyone's arrived, we shake off the journey with an unhurried walk through the Eixample — a typical Spanish Sunday — guided by architect Brian Gallagher of the B-Guided design guide.
7:45pm: We end the evening at Cafè del Centre, a 19th-century Catalan institution, over aperitivo and live jazz — the first of many conversations about what we're here to make...followed by a leisurely Catalan dinner.

9-10am: Breakfast of Catalan Pa de vidre amb Tomaquet etc
10am: We take a leisurely walk after breakfast and explore the Gothic with Suzanne Wales (writer of Hand Made Spain) or her partner Brian (if she is not available). We will visit the shops of some amazing artisans... the oldest apothecary, a jeweler working with archeological artifacts, see one the oldest and quintessential shoe workshops in Spain, and visit Barcelona's oldest shop where they still make candles.
1/2pm: Lunch at Santa Caterina market or the alleys of the old Jewish Quarter (El Call).
4pm: Back at our home workshop, I talk through the history and material choices in handmade shoes. You'll then dye your first pieces of leather.
Freetime at dinner.

9-10am: Breakfast
10am: We start our day with a home session learning the meditative craft of batik on silk. 2pm: Lunch at home as we steam our Batik pieces
4pm: Then we head into the oldest part of Barcelona to historic Raval to visit Catu and Ignacio's shoemaking workshop — a completely different approach to the craft, full of innovation and creativity rooted in tradition.
6pm: La Boqueria market for a tour as we gather ingredients for our Paella making class for our dinner.

9-10am: Breakfast
10am: The morning you've been building toward — we cut into your leather and begin constructing your own Sevilla Smith shoes. It's a long, satisfying studio day as the pieces slowly become a pair.
2pm: Lunch at home, Mediterranean pica pica so we can work as we craft
4pm: In the late afternoon, we shift to sandal-making, learning the menorquina, a classic Catalan design.
Freetime after you are done with your menorquinas.

9-10am: Breakfast
10:30am: We are picked up and head to a home workshop in the hills to learn about indigo dyeing and fermenting. I will have some local pieces for you to dye, but also bring pieces of your own (just make sure they have been washed 5x).
1:30pm: Then we head to Barcelona's only vineyard for a lunch and then an full afternoon among the vines and olive groves, where we will work with local aromatic plants gathered in the summer to create an autumn oil blend for the body. We will explore the physical, emotional and skincare benefits of the wild plants to hand and take home a botanical skincare blend.
7-9pm: The vineyard is also where we learn more about their grape cultivating source and process. We have dinner at the vineyard farmhouse.

8pm: I will take you to a great local place in Gracia, and show you where you can have churros and chocolate on your way home.

9-10am: Breakfast
10am: We begin with the history and technique of bobbin lace — one of the oldest and most hypnotic crafts in Catalonia.
1pm: lunch nearby
The afternoon is left open: pack, wander, or finish anything on your Barcelona list.
